Federal Marriage Amendment

FMA IV (Federal Marriage Amendment)

Round 3 in the battle to preserve traditional marriage is set for later this month.

The House of Representatives is expected to vote soon — possibly during the week of Sept. 20 — on the Federal Marriage Amendment. The bill, H.J. Res. 56, is identical to the legislation that was voted down in the Senate earlier this summer.

Success in the House is more likely, but still will require the efforts of family advocates like you.

Citizen Alert! for the Great Lakes State

After a rally for same-sex marriage, Michigan needs to define marriage in its constitution — and your voice is needed to make that possible.

Michigan, like so many other states these days, is attempting to protect itself from being forced to recognize same-sex marriages from San Francisco or, potentially, Massachusetts. But the threat got closer to home this week, with a rally in Detroit in support of same-sex marriage.

About 100 protesters gathered at City Hall, chanting, waving signs and listening to speakers. Then, the rally attendees marched to the Wayne County clerk's office, where seven same-sex couples applied for marriage licenses. The clerk, unlike counterparts in San Francisco and a few New York towns, refused to issue licenses and told the applicants that same-sex marriage is against Michigan law.

He then handed out copies of that law.

And while that law was enough to prevent Detroit from joining the ranks of rogue cities issuing marriage licenses to homosexuals, it won't be enough to stop the court challenges that can be expected if the Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court decision legalizing same-sex unions is left unchecked and gay couples start marrying there in May.

The only recourse for Michigan is to amend its constitution, a process that has been started in the Legislature. House Joint Resolution U is expected to come to a vote on the House floor next Tuesday.

A two-thirds vote is necessary in the House for the resolution to advance to the Senate. To make sure there are at least 73 votes, each representative must hear from his or her constituents that marriage must be protected from redefinition by judges and lawless mayors. If approved by both chambers, the resolution will appear on ballot this fall.

TAKE ACTION!! Please contact your state representative and politely urge him or her to support HJR U, the DOMA amendment. Point out that the people of Michigan should decide what the definition of marriage will be.
